Writers Condemn Brutal Attack on National Secretary Izunna Okafor, Demand Swift Justice

WRITERS CONDEMN BRUTAL ATTACK ON NATIONAL SECRETARY IZUNNA OKAFOR, DEMAND SWIFT JUSTICE

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has vehemently condemned the reprehensible attack on its National Secretary, Mr. Izunna Okafor, by officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State. The incident occurred last week as Okafor, a dedicated reporter with 247ureports.com, was returning from Nnewi after covering the Anambra South Rally of the Soludo Ambassadors.

A group of ten NSCDC officers reportedly assaulted Mr. Okafor, accusing the media of being a source of problems in Nigeria. Shockingly, the officers not only physically attacked the journalist but also brandished firearms, threatening to shoot him. It was only due to the intervention and pleas of fellow passengers that a potentially tragic situation was averted.

Mr. Okafor, who sustained injuries during the attack, has since spoken out about the horrifying experience.

The SYNW under the leadership of Wole Adedoyin has expressed its deep concern for the safety and well-being of journalists who play a crucial role in society by providing objective and timely information.

The SYNW commended the prompt response of the Anambra State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Edwin Osuala, for initiating a full-scale investigation into the matter. The SYNW urged the authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry, holding accountable anyone found guilty of wrongdoing in accordance with the law.

According to the statement, “Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, and any attack on journalists undermines this fundamental pillar of society.”

The SYNW therefore, called on relevant stakeholders, including human rights organizations, to join in condemning this assault and advocating for justice.

In the statement, SYNW President, Wole Adedoyin emphasized the need for security agencies to respect the rights of journalists and citizens, stating that such acts of aggression are not only an attack on individuals but also an assault on the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

The SYNW called on the NSCDC and other security agencies to institute measures that will prevent a recurrence of such incidents, ensuring the safety of journalists and upholding the constitutional rights of citizens.

“The SYNW stands in solidarity with Mr. Izunna Okafor and all journalists who face threats and attacks in the course of their duty. The SYNW will closely monitor the investigation and collaborate with relevant organizations to ensure justice is served.” The statement ended.

APGA Osun Gives Reasons for Withholding Comment on Governor Adeleke's Performance, Achievements

APGA OSUN GIVES REASONS FOR WITHHOLDING COMMENT ON GOVERNOR ADELEKE'S PERFORMANCE, ACHIEVEMENTS

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has refrained from offering immediate commentary on Governor Ademola Adeleke's performance and achievements for valid and strategic reasons. The party believes that a thorough evaluation of the government's progress should be conducted before making any public statements.

In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Wole Adedoyin said, as of July 16th of this year, Governor Ademola Adeleke's administration completed its first year in office. According to him, APGA recognized that the challenges inherited from the previous Governor Oyetola APC-led government cannot be resolved entirely within such a short time frame. Cleaning up the mess left behind by the previous administration requires thoughtful planning, dedication, and careful execution, all of which take time.

Furthermore, Governor Adeleke recently appointed and assigned portfolios to his newly appointed commissioners. As a result, it is essential to allow these newly constituted government bodies time to settle into their roles and implement their strategies before passing any judgment on their performance.

Also, APGA believes in a measured and comprehensive approach to governance assessment. Rushing to critique a government's performance without ample information and time to evaluate its policies can be counterproductive and unfair. Therefore, the party aims to conduct a thorough and unbiased evaluation of Governor Adeleke's governance style.

In the interest of transparency and accuracy, APGA has decided to give the Adeleke administration a reasonable period to showcase its plans, policies, and achievements. Only through this patient approach can a fair and well-informed assessment be made on the impact of the government's actions on the people.

The party understands the urgency to deliver on the promises made to the citizens, and therefore, APGA commits to conducting a diligent review of the government's performance within the next five to six months. This will allow sufficient time for projects and policies to take shape, and their outcomes can be effectively measured.

APGA remains committed to holding public officials accountable for their actions and ensuring that the interests of the people are protected. The party acknowledges the significance of constructive feedback and its role in fostering good governance.
